After much anticipation and hearing the commercials on radio for the past 3 months, the day of Super GT finally came and boy were we an excited bunch. For me it was my first time and i seriously did not know what to expect but for Kevin he has been to Super GT in the past few years. All of us had problems sleeping the night before because of the excitement creeping on us; like a feverish disease and the blistering heat that is notorious here certainly did not do us any justice. I am not sure if there is such a thing as a good disease, because as feverish and as tired from the lack of sleep and prancing round the five thousand odd meter long Sepang track to capture the beasts in action the thrills and spills as well from the weekend kept all of us going, with a force more potent than any energy drink in the world.
From the minute you enter Sepang’s gates, you are immediately immersed in activities, the most exciting thing other than the race is a motorshow that had so much on display; from aftermarket parts and exotic beauties for all to ogle at. The weather was yin and yang over the weekend, with comforting cloudy skies on saturday, and the infamous skin piercing headache inducing 38 degrees on the second day, with a recorded 47 degree track temprature; possibly a good thing for the drivers, because their tyres can warm up faster.
The GT 300 and 500 races were not the only race happening over the weekend, with the Hong Kong Super Car Club Race and the Vios and Yaris one make races from Thailand filling the spots for when the GT boys are not on track, and the highlight of the sub events was the biggest sports and luxury car meet in Malaysia consisting of 400 over vehicles, which provided the ultimate bang for buck or the spectators that made the pilgrimage from all over Malaysia and the world to Sepang that is actually quite secluded, literally turning the track into a Mecca for Motor heads over the weekend with the vast array of automotive delights.
Let’s take a look at some of the highlights that wen down during the first of the two epic days, Starting the medley with this photo of Craft Racing’s pair of Ford GT’s.
One of the best super cars today is the Ferrari F458, and they were abundantly utilised for the races.
After the Hong Kong Super Car race was complete, the GT cars finally got to embark on their shakedown run, and the soundtrack was absolutely without fault. each exhaust note, each consecutive pass the cars did, the symphony etched deep into our hearts and souls. Here’s the Kobelco SC430 throwing a bit of dirt, evidence of how hard the drivers are pushing the cars round the track to grab the best possible pole position for the optimum advantage.
Here’s the “Eva Racer” in action, a rather unusual looking car with Robot-like styling and the easily recognisable green and purple colour scheme based on the “Evangelion” anime and was a car that had one of the best soundtracks.
The ultimate noise came from this beast; Reminiscent of the noise that one would usually encounter in Formula 1, Honda’s brutal V8 HSV-010. This particular one, the Weider HSV-010 was the champion for the super GT weekend, piloted by Takashi Kogure and Carlo Van Dam.
Day 1 had already been epic, then came Day 2, which was much more crowded, with a whopping 80,000 fans packing the entire facility, a record 20,000 more than last year according to this year’s organising entity, JPM Motorsports. The day began for us with Pit walkabouts, where spectators holding pit passes and media personnel were allowed into the pit area where they could get up close with the drivers, the amazing cars and of course the mesmerizing GT Queens who are just such an essential part of Super GT. Enjoy the Visual feast!
The Eva Racer, with its body panels off so the technicians can prepare it for the race to come.
All pits were full of action, and some even frantic mechanics running around with laptops in the last hours before the ultimate JDM showdown of the year.
A pair of “Itasha” styled Z4s, from the Good Smile Racing team, an impressive collaboration between JDM style and EUDM tech.
We saw a little commotion happening on the track, and then it hit me; its time for the huge car meet! the cars were assembling on the main straight and boy was it amazing.
Millions of dollars, all in one location.
Some utterly breathless examples of sports and luxury cars, like this Carbon Fiber faced GTR.
A beast Evo 5 wearing smokin’ hot neon green Volk Wheels.
The time finally came for the Main event, the GT 300 and 500 54 laps final race. all the cars were set in their respective positions on the grid, and we, went, to HEAVEN. Here’s one of the cars that is the biggest hype of the year, the brother to the FT86 Toyota, The BRZ.
The Autobacs HSV-010, with a legendary advantage, that comes in toe form of a human; Keiichi Tsuchiya.
Here he is! the legend, posing with an ASL Garaiya, something you don’t see everyday on Malaysian shores.
Her warm smile and sexiness is the sun’s arch nemesis.
Asuka, with her Evangelion inspired outfit.
The Eneos Sustina SC430, just look at the glare on the car. Proof of how hot it was and the stuff we go through to provide the ultimate coverage.
The PA system announced the beginning of the race and that the cars be prepped and ready to do battle, and within a few moments, they were off! we immediately hopped into the complimentary track taxis that brought us to our chosen shooting spot, and we chose the hairpin with the most action! i have a suggestion for those who are reading this article; enjoy the images and standby your tissues, because its gonna be one hell of a ride!
GSR HATSUNEMIKU Z4
The Denso BRZ. breathtaking isn’t it?
The “DECHAU!” Aston Martin. amazing car, amazing sound.
Autobacs ASL Garaiya, mistaken by some spectators as a Pagani which is forgivable.. because this car isn’t available here.
The Zent R8.. who wasn’t performing well, but was still utter joy to watch in action.
The RUN UP Corvette. stunning.
The Calsonic GTR. This and the Autech GTR were the only cars i saw spitting flames, and here is a shot of the Calsonic Flame spitting!
This time its not a German Itasha styled, but Italian and i must say, its pretty sexy like that. The PACIFIC NAC ITAMUSUME F430.
The Epson HSV; one of many HSV’s on the track giving the GSR Z4 a seriously hard time.
And here’s the champion cars, the Weider HSV-010 and the Hankook Porsche from the GT 500 and GT 300 races respectively.
The weekend finally came to an end and as Sepang slowly cleared out leaving us behind to contemplate on how amazing the whole event was. The conclusion is that it was an exceptional success and i believe that if the question to spectators was if they will come back next year, the answer will most probably be yes; its a definite yes from me!
I shall leave you with this final image of the Autech GT Queen, whom i managed to sweet talk into giving us 7Tuners some love!
