If you don’t like 86′s and BRZ’s, the 2013 Tokyo Auto Salon is definitely not the place for you. Not only is this the biggest salon in years, but it is absolutely LOADED with Toyotas and Subarus. I must have counted one 86 or BRZ for every five or six other cars. There are easily over 100 of Japan’s latest builds on the twin platforms that are sweeping the world and making people gnash their teeth at the sometimes 18 month waiting list to order the cars…

This year, I am pleased to be bringing you exclusive backstage-preview content from the Thursday “set-up” day, where only those connected to the industry have a chance to go – 7Tune being among them. Together with fellow professional shooter, Rob Shaw from Backfromleave.com, we smashed through 12 hours and all 11 halls to bring 7Tuners a ‘lil sneak peak of what’s going on behind the curtain.

It’s a tough task to take this years TAS in all at once – there is simply too much for a single person to do in one day but I suppose that’s always the way when circus time rolls around. Since the auto-freaks weren’t let loose through the doors, it was a really good chance to peer into engine bays, wheel wells and interiors and marvel at how industrious the Japanese are in the lead up to the salon. I mean, the place was a complete mess and still was at 8pm when I left. How they get it looking so shiny come 9am the following day is absolutely beyond me! One of my friends told me about an announcement over the P.A that sounded earlier in the day. Basically, if any workers are still there after 11pm, the TAS organizers would start charging them. Think about that… the construction workers and exhibitors were having to PAY to work! That is the Japanese way, if you can understand the underlying message in that address…

I have to admit, some 86 and BRZ builds disappointed me and some really struck me as magnificent.

Like the Abflug Spiral 86 for example. Beautifully simplistic and aggressive all at once, it was the embodiment and final realization of months of work behind the scenes for Abflug to rethink their approaches and add a new tasty flavor to their menu. I absolutely LOVE it and that is the kit my 86 will be wearing. The wheels I don’t like so much but that can be easily fixed – It’s easy and simple to change your shoes, if they don’t match the suit.

Abflug have 7 cars at the show this year and all of them boast a different “flavor”. Among them are two GT-R’s; the previous generation in silver and the new release in red. I will be shooting the Red GT-R right after the Auto Salon is finished.

All the major tuners are present at the show this year and over the next few days we will be bringing you all the details of the show in as much detail as possible! Check back each day for the action and also check into our 7Tune Facebook page for live updates from the show of all the hottest cars Japan has to offer.

It’s 86 and BRZ overload! Even though it’s easy to see that a Toyota 86′s, Subaru BRZ’s, Nissan GT-R’s, Subaru Sti’s, Lan Evo’s and a host of exotic Euro’s dominate the show, we won’t just be covering these since there is a wealth of other cars present to satisfy every person, regardless of their inclinations!

Now, on with the pics!!

Silk Blaze 86

Nissan will be doing “pitstops” at their booth this weekend.

One WILD and WIDE FC RX-7

Oh, I’m sorry Subaru, I thought you said there wasn’t enough room in the engine bay for a turbo…

The 2013 TAS has a few surprises, like tuned MP-4 12C’s…

… some special inclusions into the Toyota lineup for official options for their 86′s

.. the craziest Aventador in the world…

… not one but THREE LM inspired Ferrari F40′s…

And some new takes on an old application.

But as I mentioned, the stars of the show are the 86 and BRZ!

There was other interesting metal of course… like this genuine Shelby Cobra…

This Honda F1 racer…

… camber beyond belief…

Fully fledged track stars like this NSX…

…not to mention family favorites like the Chaser…

…Hachi Roku…

… and R34 GT-R…

There’s something for everyone… whether that application be weird…

Stylish…

… Tried and Tested…

Pure function…

..or just plain out there…

…This was just a taste of what is happening at this years TAS and there is literally tons to cover here over the next few days so no preview is going to suffice.

On that note, I’m going to sign off, grab a few Z’s, recharge the batteries and hit the halls again tomorrow morning for more coverage of the best tuning show in Japan on the only place you know that understands the Japanese industry best… 7Tune.

Amazing coverage. The TOM’s GT86 caught my eye, simplistic and calm. and if I’m being fair – the Abflug kit is a bit too wild for my taste. Nonetheless, great coverage. Thanks for a decent break from revision!

    Damn, no Honduhs?

Show was full of BRZs but I don’t mind it one bit. Great cover Adam!
