FT-86 Concept Debut At Toyota Metapolis

7Tune reader Ken (aka K) was kind enough to drop us a line about the new Toyota FT-86 Concept and some high resolution photos currently flying around the internet and to be honest, we were caught sleeping! Usually the rumors slow down towards the Tokyo Motor Show which will be held later this month so it’s great to see Toyota jumping the gun and providing official images of the long awaited concept. For those who can read Japanese, Toyota Metapolis also has a debut event for the FT-86 on October 23rd.

What’s Toyota Metapolis? It’s a virtual city created for visitors to experience Toyota’s products, concepts, philosophy and events all in cartoon-like 3 dimensional graphics not unlike Sony’s “Playstation Home” virtual world. On October 23rd, visitors to Metapolis will be treated to an unveiling of the FT-86 Concept where they will be able to exchange opinions on the car which will be logged by Toyota and may affect certain aspects of the final production model. There will also be a quiz and other games and after the event a questionnaire will be provided for visitors to fill out and in turn will be given a present. What this present is exactly we don’t know, we’ll have to wait for the next news release. Fingers crossed it’s a 1/12th scale plastic model kit of the FT-86! Maybe not…

As for the FT-86 concept itself, the team here at 7Tune gives it a big thumbs up. While the FT-86 borrows a lot of styling cues from the FT-HS hybrid sports car, which isn’t a bad thing at all, it also has a style of its own which surely will become a legendary car in the future in its own right. Links to the original “Hachiroku” aside, the FT-86 concept should translate into a very desirable road car despite it’s lower power rating which current rumors suggest will be around 160HP200HP. Some have already mentioned that the Subaru sourced 2.0L flat-four engine severs any links with the original AE86, but Toyota has done a lot to keep the essence of the original in a truely modern lightweight RWD concept and for that we think it’ll be a winner. 7Tune will be at the Tokyo Motor Show press days so stay tuned for more photos and information later this month.

Any word on the Subaru platform? Also you mentioned previously that this would be named the 086a?

  • http://www.7tune.com Justin Karow

Jason, we didn’t say it would be named the 086A, we said that was the “code name” to be used throughout its development: http://www.7tune.com/toyotasubaru-compact-sports-car-code-086a/

No new news on the Subaru platform yet as far as we know.

Im getting this when it first comes out and I will get featured on 7tune =D

  • http://www.7tune.com Justin Karow

Only if you beat me to it Danny :D Unlike the Nissan GT-R, this is a car I definitely have the dollars for!

  • Stingray

It’s clear that this is the pre-production car, now If you ask me they shouldn’t change a thing on the car, ok maybe the futuristic dash, but other then that, the car is perfect. Some rumors say that it will get the 2.5 boxer that will deliver up to 300 hp.

Oh and don’t you mean you have the Yen for it Justin? :P BTW you guys wore caught sleeping when the details and pic about the pre production Honda CR-Z emerged.

  • http://www.7tune.com Justin Karow

That’s right Stingray, we were napping when the CR-Z pics came out too… we’ve been working hard on non-news items lately and official press releases (which are jumped on by every car website on the planet within hours of release)are set as a lower priority while we’ve been doing that. In other words: we’re not purposely being lazy ;)

  • Stingray

I know Justin and I appreciate all the hard work you guys are doing , I’m just a little bitchy today, so don’t worry.

Here’s a nice design dissection of the FT-86 made by Jalopnik.

BTW Do you guys think that the emerge of the so called “Asian Union” can affect the plans and evolution of the japanese car makers. I knew that when the lefty socialists took the power in Japan something like this might happen.

Sorry, I know that my post is of topic, but it’s an interesting question.

Gotta tone down that Futurama dashboard. How about some round analog dials? This car is supposed to be simple, lightwieght, and cheap. Nice otherwise.

    Yay!!! Finally!!!

Stingray: If the past 3 Japanese Prime Ministers are anything to go by, Hatoyama will be out by the end of next year ;) to be replaced by another short term leader…

    BEAUTIFULL :0

  • K’

This concept looks great! It’s the first actual PHYSICAL form of the car we’ve seen outside of the chopped and welded Legacy from a few years ago.

I can’t wait until you guys cover TAS this year! Only a few more weeks…

Keep up the fantastic work 7Tune!

  • josebunbury

Yay..!!! finally… I can’t wait to see the final road version and hopefully the don’t change the outside just that dash… I also hope TRD get their crafty little hands on this thing as well as STI… Oh!! the rejoice…!!!!

  • Richard

Nobody has mentioned the see-thru “A” pillars… very cool… I know Volvo did a x-style version on their concept for the C30, but it never made it to market.

  • LonePhantom

Well that definitely is a great looking concept from the exterior shots. I’d imagine that there wont be too many changes on that front.

Like most concepts though, the interior is a little over the top. I definitely hope the leather stitched dash with the head unit behind it doesn’t make it in to production as it does look a little silly. Simpler gauges might be nice too as a through back to the original car.

  • K’

TAS, TMS…my mistake lol…always get those mixed up.

    Check out those brakes!

  • Taido

That new exterior is near perfect. And the interior is a bit overboard. Standard spedo/tachometer guage cluster with shift light would be best. The seats are over the top as well. Needs sport bucket seats that held you firm while going through the turns. And even if you target the market of the fresh wave of tuners, people in the 30-50 range will still buy this car for the nostalgiac value. Especially if there’s a luxury package to be had.

  • Taido

    And what’s with the zippers?

  • celica-xx

Bah! I spend a few days away and come back just in time to miss the greatest development in Toyotas recent history.

FT-86 looks stunning, much better than I thought it’d be going by all those renders. Of course the interior will be changed but the more they keep to that concept the better. I noticed the youtube vid with the FT-86 on GT5 showed the red intake manifold of the boxer 4. Deep down I wish it was a total Toyota produced model but heck, I’d be happy with any brand new cheapish Toyota RWD coupe.

I will carry a wad of cash with me everywhere so that right when it drops in dealerships I will be the first one to it.

I’m glad we got more info.

Thanks for the article. This should drive some readers to the site.

Nice article Justin, I also like the cartoons as well. Can’t wait to see this in production. Hopefully they will not modify any part of it.
