After some bad news last week concerning Mitsubishi’s Ralliart division and its scaling down of business, it comes as a pleasant surprise that the new RVR has more than tripled its expected sales target.
5169 orders have been placed since the RVR’s introduction on February 17 in Japan, far exceeding the 1500 units that were expected to be sold in the first month. Of those ordered, 75% of RVRs will be built to the highest ’G’ specification, which includes wide-angle HID headlights and push button starter as standard equipment. The remaining orders will be built to middle grade ‘M’ specification (18%) and entry level ‘E’ specification (7%).
Customers who traded in vehicles for the new RVR were varied with just as many trading larger capacity sedans, wagons and SUVs as there were those trading in compact and lightweight ‘Kei’ cars, showing that the RVR’s ’Just Size’ compact dimensions coupled with eco-car tax incentives have formed a winning combination and appeals to a wide range of buyers in Japan.
