Subaru Legacy Selling Like Hot… Cars?

Sales executives at Subaru have sold over twice the number of Legacy sedans and wagons needed to reach the sales target (3,000) for its first month on the market. The often criticized look of the new Legacy obviously hasn’t had an effect on Japanese buyers!

Subaru sold 7,018 Legacy sedans and wagons in the month from May 20th to June 21st which is well over double the sales needed to reach their target of 3,000. That’s great news for Subaru, but what exactly are Japanese customers buying? Subaru has also released a break down of sales spread over the different models, the B4 Sedan, the Touring Wagon and the Outback. It’s interesting to see how the Japanese market has reacted to the styling of the new car which, in Japan and abroad, got a pretty lukewarm reception. Don’t judge a car by its face…

1. Body Type Distribution

B4 (Sedan) 32.5%
Touring Wagon 50.5%
Outback 17.0%
2. Model Distribution (across all body types)

2.5i 52.9%
2.5GT 43.0%
3.6R 4.1%

3. Buyer Age Distribution

B4 (Sedan) Touring Wagon Outback Total
Over 20 11.5% 10.8% 6.9% 10.4%
Over 30 22.7% 31.5% 17.6% 26.0%
Over 40 21.3% 29.0% 29.7% 26.4%
Over 50 25.6% 17.4% 26.1% 21.8%
Over 60 18.9% 11.3% 19.7% 15.4%

4. Body Color Distribution (across all body types)

Satin White Pearl 31.7% Chamelia Red Pearl 3.9%
Crystal Black Silica 27.8% Sunlight Gold Opal 2.2%
Steel Silver Metallic 15.6% Dark Amethyst Galaxy 1.8%
Graphite Grey Metallic 11.1% Sage Green Metallic 0.9%
Galaxy Grey Silica 5.0%

The figures don’t contain any surprises other than comparatively low 3.6R sales, but still, the new Legacy has gotten off to a good start.

I kinda like the new Legacy(s). At different angles is like they took popular JDM models and mashed it up and it actually looks good. But thats just me.

Mh, na. The last breath taking design was the BG5 one, but now (in my opinion) they’ve reached an all time low.

It’s a typical modern car design, nothing special.

And why did they put an 2.5l engine inside the car which provides 280hps when they allready got that power out of a 2.0l machine??

    mh, i dunno

Shivago: The 2.5GT gets a little more torque and 5 more HP… although the peak torque comes in much higher in the rev range.

I would like to have one of the new Legacies

But besides of my personal taste, i’m really happy that subaru is going to make some money. maybe that will push them back into the ralley business. :)

I’d guess they’re using a 2.5 for emissions reasons, they seem to have an impact in europe and america.

If I cover up the front end and roof, it reminds me of a Toyota Camry, which I guess is why it’s selling well with the middle aged. Which then makes me wonder why Subaru changed the styling of the WRX to try and target an older audience if they already had a good seller for that demographic.

i think that a subaru legacy, toyota soarer, nissan cima or toyota celsior are looking better than a mercedes, BMW or an audi or somethin like that.
not because they come from germany, you know lots of people say
that germany makes the best cars because they are big, they are safe
and most of them say that they are beautifull, but i don´t
    think that is true.
for me is a japanese car better than the rest,it looks better
it drives better and it´s even a bit cheaper than a car from europe.
so thats how i see it
