Super GT Test Day At Suzuka Circuit

It was all hands on deck for the first of four combined test days for all Super GT manufacturers and teams at Suzuka Circuit and it goes without saying that the Honda HSV-010 GT stole the show.

The first of four test days leading up to the opening round of the Super GT season was open to the public and most of the interest surrounding the 2010 cars was for the HSV-010 GT and what times it would post against Nissan’s mighty GT-R. Surprisingly (or unsurprisingly some might say) the HSV-010 GT posted almost identical times to the GT-R despite behaving “like the ultimate cornering machine” through the turns, according to one report. The Dome Honda HSV-010 GT eventually went on to post the fastest time of the day with a 1:54.723, while the Nismo GT-R was very close behind with a 1:54.787. Teams running the Lexus SC430 GT500 car weren’t being timed by the circuit timing equipment so comparisons couldn’t be made with the other cars, however Bridgestone did their own timing and apparently the Tom’s SC430 ran a 1:52.5!

One of the more interesting sights on the day was the special cataylzer mounted in the exhaust tip of the HSV-010 GT and GT-R to ignite excess gases emitted from the car. This is the same catalyzer as used in last year’s Formula Nippon series. The Dome HSV-010 GT seemed to make the most use of the catalyzer in off-throttle situations, even more so than the other cars, but it could be a result of the particular tune of the car or the driving style. At any rate it’s a very visible, albeit small step in the right “eco-direction” for Honda and Super GT.

I can’t wait to see Lexus, Honda and Nissan battle it out this year in Super GT! It should be very exciting!

I’m wondering when we will see the LFA in the competition?

  • Stingray

I think I’ve read somewhere that a private team will enter one or two LFA’s, but really now, Lexus needs a new SC, because it looks so dated, in fact this second gen was born outdated. And Lexus is capable to build a GT that will make donuts around the BMW 6 Series. And speaking of Germans, any words about the DTM merging with Super GT? http://www.autoblog.com/2009/12/08/dtm-cars-to-run-in-japans-supergt-series/
Back to the NSX/HSV, I wouldn’t bet against it this year, Honda sits on a gold mine and they are not getting the gold by not producing the car.

That is a fantastic proposition, actually.

It makes sense when you consider how important brands like BMW, Mercedes and Audi are to the Japanese market. It is an image thing and this is also a double edged sword. I will become a full time convert if these marques were to join the fray.

For some reason I can see Super GT hotting up massively in the next few years…

  • Stingray

Yeah, but it is also dangerous, think at the shame and sales hit the Japanese brands will take if the Germans win. It’s possible that the SuperGT as we know it will die.

that honda screams cancelled nsx prototype really loud

You say it’s Eco, but the flames look awesome so bring it on just for the look of it :)

The SC430 kicked ass haha. It does look outdated like Stingray said though. I’m also liking the Raybrig HSV-010 with the military look.
If only Toyota/Lexus would field the LFA I would probably make plans to move to Japan for a season..

The SC430s did turn the quickest times of the day. It wasn’t officially announced but it was on the board. Quickest was the Petronas Tom’s car @ 1:53.14.

It seems great imagining all the top cars in competition. It will surely be a sight to watch all the cars striving to clock the shortest time. The Lexus might be the one to steal the show.

Kris: That wasn’t the Bridgestone time though was it? SuperGT.net says the fastest Bridgestone timed laps was a mid-1:52 by Tom’s Petronas.

I really really dig that HSV-010! Can’t wait to get a chance to see it in person :D
