In the aftermath of last year’s Tokyo Motor Show, Toyota’s North American design studio CALTY has survived the selection process to have its version of the FT-86 accepted as the basis of the new model instead of European and Japanese efforts.

Toyota Europe Design Development (ED²) was responsible for the design of the FT-86 Concept which was shown at the Tokyo Motor Show last October and was relatively well received by the public. We now know that the ED² design was rejected as early as November last year, leaving the CALTY and Toyota Technical Center’s designs to go head to head. By year’s end the Toyota Technical Center’s effort was also rejected in favor of the CALTY design. At this point the basic design of the FT-86 is ready with only minor changes yet to be decided and Toyota management will make a final decision on these sometime in March. As for the new design, apparently much of the original CALTY version will remain which makes less use of curved surfaces but gives the FT-86 a higher profile around the nose section with increased overhang, although basic dimensions like wheelbase, height and width remain unchanged. CALTY was responsible for the FT-HS concept so it’s possible some subtle styling cues from that design will have an impact on the revised FT-86 shape.

As far as the Subaru 216A is concerned, apparently both it and the Toyota FT-86 will differ only with badges and equipment levels despite earlier rumors of the two models differing considerably. The engine and drivetrain will remain unchanged from the D-4S direct injected EJ20 flat four for the naturally aspirated models, however the turbocharged G’s version will get a stronger differential and 6-speed transmission assuming it makes production.

Wait, WHAT? You mean the red FT-86 designed in Nice, France, the car that took the minds of sports cars fans all over the world it’s no more on the role? And the final car will be this fish faced car with the Joker’s evil grin? You are also telling me that the Subbie version will be a shameless badge engineering product? What’s wrong with Toyota, those recent recalls affected their brain and their right thinking or what?
And on the top of that the Toyota America’s President Jim Lentz, said that there will be no new Supra. Well this wasn’t a very good day anyway. I am still waiting more info on that and maybe this new concept at the Geneva auto show.
But hey, if the FT-HS came from America and the FT-86 from Europe, what was the Japanese proposal?

  • celica-xx

I’m not sure if this is good news or bad news. Good in that I want to see a proper photo of this Calty design first before going apes**t because it could be an even better design. But it could be bad in that the FT86 concept was a sweet car and I had my heart set on it for months now. Still Toyota has my money when it gets released whatever they do.

  • Jose M.

Wow..!!! those are some news alright, but still even though the concept that has been shown and that sweet tuned version that have taken the hearts of millions of us waiting for this car including Gran Turismo’s Polyphony Digital will not make it to the street, that picture of the car still looks so much better than most of the cars that are out on the streets today.
I did get a little sad that the previous concept will not make it, but as long as the FT-86 drives like it should (like a bat outta hell) they can make it look like the wienermobile for all I care…

  • K’

I knew they’d water it down somehow. The design we’ve seen is just way too complicated for them to make it street ready (especially those front fenders). Overall, if they keep the general shape of the car I wouldn’t mind the design too much, it’s not something you can’t fix via aftermarket.

  • Calster17

WHAT! I cant beleave this! Make a car that is the best looking thing you have made in ages(last killer design by Toyota, in my eyes was the Mk3 MR2) and then have everyone dream about it, make AE86 style photoshop pictures, make a second tuned edtion to get us even more excited…….just to turn around and give them all the two fingers and say “you know what, it was never going to look like this”

but then again, it was to be tonned down, but it looks like one of them background cars fetured in a game or somthing…too bland now! I’ve lost respect for Toyota now… :(

  • Swift

Nooooo! I am literally waiting on bated breath in order to get this vehicle. It is the first (affordable) car I’ve seen in a long time that pulls all the right emotions…plus it’s rear wheel drive and has a boxer engine. It was love at first sight, and now they’re slipping us the ugly step sister instead?!? WTF?!?

  • AE86 Tuner

Wow this concept so far looks ugly. I really liked the concept that came out at TAS. oh well I’ll just have to wait and see for the final product hopefully it will look better than this picture right now.

  • FERNAN2

please!!! i dont belive a word! that pic. isn’t even a real car!

  • saru-kun

The CALTY FT-HS was shown back in 2007 at the Detroit Auto Show. It seems to have a lot more in common with the FT-86 than the drawing above.

  • http://www.7tune.com Justin Karow

Jose M, Polyphony Digital also released GT Concept 2001 Tokyo which had the GT-R Concept in it which differs somewhat from the production GT-R, point being that appearances of concept cars in game software don’t have that much of a bearing on the final product and this is nothing new.

K’, that’s precisely the point, production feasibility. The FT-86 Concept was only ever produced to gauge crowd reaction as mentioned in our article here: http://www.7tune.com/086a-target-market-change-power-drop/

“Marketing is one of the big subjects involving the 086A and its presence at the TMS is primarily to gauge crowd reaction. The car that will be exibited will include styling cues that could very well be changed before the car goes to production…”

saru-kun, the drawing above is merely a render based on the image Holiday Auto produced. The focus is on the front fenders and nose section promarily so the rest of the car is only very loosely based on the FT-HS as these details haven’t been confirmed at all yet. Wait until March :)

  • K’

Some people tend to forget that you always try to look your best in front of the camera. I’m not going to repeat what Justin said but I’m just going to point it out because it’s important, after all last I checked Toyota was in the business to make money. You can’t make money if there’s no one interested in your product.

Like I said I KNEW they were going to water it down somehow, it was just a matter of when. Case in point: Honda CRZ. Those concepts don’t look exactly like the supposed production model (which can still be changed before actual production), but they do look similar.

Some things they do to concept and floor models: low profile tires, projector/LED lights, tint, etc. The actual production model shows up and they’re sporting hub caps and halogen lights lol. I mean in the end it really doesn’t bother me as long as the performance is still there, but it really shouldn’t be a big surprise, this tactic has been going on for decades.

  • i don’t know

frankly, i think it’ll just be a drawing design, this of course relatively related to problem toyota facing in us and europe now… for me rather than bringing new designs for the same car doesn’t really bring back consumer confident on toyota’s cars… and if they do still want to continue with new design, where can they get the money… not only toyota’s used car price drop significantly, but also returned car also need adjustment for the faulty part before being sold back…
then let’s talk about the new design.. apart from having a character(which is ugly monster), it doesn’t really have any new modifications or extras… so what’s the purpose of bringing new design? if the purpose for the new face-lift, shouldn’t they wait for several years before talk about this?
look at what mitsubishi done in europe… when evoX arrive , they tweak it a little bit and bring out FQs’ series… then suddenly everyone in europe start discuss about evoX… the thing is that, i heard news that one asian willingly to contact several grey importer whether they can get him the FQ400 since mitsubishi didn’t sell it in his country… well FQ400 is evoX that has been modified by mitsubishi’s europe branch… that’s what i call a good business strategy…

If Toyota manages to put a Scion tC face on the 86 but keep the same profile, there is a good chance to get some aftermarket hood, fender and bumpers to turn it back to the sexy style the prototype had. What it matters most is the core. and there better be a 6 speed manual not just for turbo.

  • celica-xx

It’s funny that no one really cared when the LFA was changed from the concept. I know thats a car that nobody here could afford (at a guess) so theres less lust after it in real terms but what I’m trying to say is that maybe this is just Toyotas knee jerk reaction to some negative feedback. I agree with “K” anyways..

  • Umai Kakudo

I’m betting they had to add the changes from the Euro studio to meet the newish EU pedestrian front impact requirements to make it a global market car. The EU pedestrian standards are why the new BMW’s and other EU market cars have funky bulged hoods and tall front fascias.

  • robbertsas

    Europe is genuinely sorry. :<
I kinda do like the fact that it is toned down a bit. For me it had a too futuristic appearance for a street car. We'll just see what they come up with.

  • Stingray

I too feel that the french design center it’s not used enough, their last two concepts, the FT-86 and the FT-CH are great cars, very innovative and fresh looking, that got positive reactions. Maybe they can transform the euro designed FT-86 in to an Audi TT and BMW Z4 fighting machine that combines the FT-86 style with the Lexus L finesse, let us not forget that many people said that the FT-86 looks like a mini LFA, Jalopnik even made a little joke about it, http://jalopnik.com/5387976/400000-challenge-lexus-lfa-versus-20-toyota-ft+86s. This way Lexus will introduce more good looks and excitement in to it’s lineup, and the amazing FT-86 design won’t be wasted.

  • http://www.racingotaku.wordpres.com Adam

    Wow…

What a kick in the pants. They sure know how to put out a fire, don’t they?

  • http://my.IS Jruhi4

Justin, what’s the significance of the “wait until March” comment? A new FT-86 concept (perhaps the Subaru version?) for the Geneva Auto Show? Or, perhaps, the production version unveiling?

  • http://www.7tune.com Justin Karow

Jruhi4, Holiday Auto said that March is when the styling of the FT-86 is to due be finalized. At the moment they’re saying that the CALTY design has been selected over the other two versions as the “base” of the FT-86 with further changes to be made by sometime in March. They did’t say anything about the significance of the March deadline, or anything about the Geneva show, but I’m sure the rumors will be running hot by the end of March or early April regarding the finer details of the production version.

  • Todd

The CALTY 00 Celica was so atrocious that it put the nail in the coffin of a 30-year cornerstone nameplate. The CALTY FJ Cruiser is a neurotic hodge-podge of retro and post-modern design elements. The CALTY Venza has gotta be — well, let’s not even go there.

With these dreadful models under their belts, the ‘Merican interpretation of the FT-86 should make the guaranteed-to-be-fugly Subaru look (somewhat) attractive.

  • Stingray

Easy there Todd, I was revolted too when I’ve read this news the first time, but let’s wait and see the design they will show us, after all, the CALTY team designed the FT-HS that spawned the design of the FT-86. Now, the ’00 Celica wasn’t an ugly car, but the FWD ruined it, the 2011 Sienna is the minivan, it looks the way a minivan should look, and let’s not forget that the LF Lexus concepts(including the LFA)were also designed by the CALTY. Here’s a list with their portfolio: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calty_Design_Research Some designs are cool, some are not, nobody makes all of them perfect, hopefully the FT-86(or should I call it Toyobaru? since the FT-86 was rejected) will be a cool one.

  • neeeo

What was Toyota thinking? the FT 86 at the tokyo show is an absolute stunner! Someone has come along and said lets combine the 2 designs and get one car for the same price , YUCK! wrong ! The Tokyo concept ft 86 has all the right design cues right down to the Italian flick which graced the side panel. They had better sort that droopy nose which holds the toyota badge right at the front it is like a big zit that needs squeezing or a small nod to the to the Prius bonnet .
Ask people in the real world they will steer you in the right direction if you are listening Mr Toyota !

  • Stingray

Hey, Neeeo that’s not the official design, that’s just an unfinished rendering of the FT-86 witch is probably old, http://www.motortrend.com/features/auto_news/2009/112_0912_toyota_mr2_revival/index.html Motortrend put that in an article about a future MR-2/MR-S.
You created quite a confusion with that pic Justin, but it can’t be official. Some rumors said that the G’s version was the official Japanese proposal, but that’s impossible.

  • http://www.7tune.com Justin Karow

Stingray, that image Motortrend used is the exact image used in Holiday Auto (only reversed) for its FT-86 story. We based our image on that as I mentioned above.

You can see how Motor Trend have taken this rumor and tried to quantify it by including the CR-Z angle and the FT-86 image. The trouble with that is, Holiday Auto didn’t mention anything about the CR-Z, the MR-2/MR-S or hybid powered RWD car. It seems they wanted to get in on the commotion by stating their own rumor.

  • Stingray

Ahh, the amazing powers of rumors and gossip, it’s so true when they say that high school never ends. I guess that this car could look like anything. Or maybe they will just sell the FT-HS with some more conventional rims and interior. It will be a genius move if they keep that retractable metal roof, it’s so original and cool, like e metal origami.
Oh and good morning dude, since in Japan it’s probably morning right now. :-P
